 James Madison (1751–1836) was an American Founding Father, diplomat, and the fourth president of the United States (1809–1817). Known as the "Father of the Constitution," he played a pivotal role in drafting the U.S. Constitution and authored the Bill of Rights. A key leader in the Democratic-Republican party, he also oversaw the War of 1812 during his presidency.
